a new initiative to train and develop the next generation
of leaders |

Introduction:
Many educated and promising young monks are experiencing a serious lack of opportunities for post-graduate training. Those with few resources, like the many monks from Tibetan refugee families, are at a significant disadvantage. There is a great need to assist these talented monks in realizing their potential to become leaders and teachers, and to fulfill roles as skilled administrators for their communities.
To address this need in an effective way, the IBA is offering a three year Post-Graduate Leadership Training program for monks who have completed their monastic education and who have shown excellence in their understanding of Buddhist Philosophy.
Program Description:
In this program, Language study will be available to each monk in his choice of either English or Mandarin Chinese. Training in oral and written Translation will follow. It is possible that those showing exceptional aptitude will be able to train further, within the IBA's translation facility, which has so far published over 70 titles, distributed world-wide.
Tasks related to Administration which these monks may be asked to carry out for their communities, (or to train and supervise others to carry out) include specializations like Accounting as well as more general skills of Administration and Communication such as Computer Literacy. Courses will be offered in all these areas, in addition to training in basic and advanced skills of Leadership.
There will be approximately 30 monks eligible to enter this elite program's first three-year intake of students. Participating monks will spend a little over eight intensive months each year at the IBA. For the remaining months of the year, the IBA's high-profile annual program in Buddhist Philosophy and the Tibetan language, for International scholars and students, will be the central focus of the IBA's activities.
How you can help:
In order to secure an auspicious beginning to the IBA's new Post-Graduate Leadership Training program, the IBA's supporters are being asked to assist in organizing sponsorships to provide the resources needed to carry out this program. Specifically, each of the approx. 30 monks needs sponsor support for his tuition and his room and board in the amount of $40 US per month. Some supporters may be able to organize groups who will jointly sponsor a monk, while others may be able to take on full sponsorship themselves. Some people are able to offer 6 months of sponsorship, or a year. There is also another important way of contributing to the IBA's Post Graduate Leadership Training program, which is through the donation of funds for computer equipment for the library's Computer Literacy Lab. Some supporters are even bringing small laptop computers directly to the IBA for the monks to learn to use, under supervision. All these forms of support are warmly welcomed and encouraged.
